RIP CURL PRO HEADS TO WINKIPOP FOR ROUND ONE START

News provided by ASP World Tour on 12 April 2006

With the swell rising at Bells Beach, Victoria, Australia today, organisers of the Rip Curl Pro Surf and Music festival have decided to send out surfers to compete in round one.

Jump on line to www.aspworldtour.com or www.ripcurl.com/ripcurlpro to catch all the action now!

The event, the second on the Foster’s ASP Men’s World Tour, has been on hold since 8am but with waves beginning to break at Winkipop (located 200 metres away from the fames Bells Beach Bowl) at around one to 1.5 metres (three to four feet) the call has been made to shift to the nearby location.

The opening round of the Rip Curl Pro main event will consist of 16 three-man heats with the winner progressing through to round three and second and third place getters moving into round two.

The event takes four days to complete and with the waiting period extending till April 22, organisers have the luxury to hold off proceedings until optimum swell and wind conditions arrive.

Going into round one there have been numerous withdrawals due to injury with the latest victim being Raoni Monteiro (BRA).

Nursing an injured knee he will sit on the sidelines with Toby Martin (AUS) who has an injured shoulder and Adrian Buchan (AUS) who is recovering from a niggling ankle injury.

Monteiro will be replaced in the first round by Hawaiian sensation Kekoa Bacalso who has had a sterling year after becoming the 2005 ASP World Junior Champion.
