San Juan Capistrano, Calif. - May 16, 2011 - Surfing America, the national governing body for surfing in the USA, is gearing up for the annual Surfing America USA Championships. The event, which decides the undisputed USA surfing champions by pooling top talent from Surfing America recognized organizations and the Surfing America Prime Series presented by Got Milk?, will culminate in the announcement of the 2012 PacSun USA Surf Team.
This year’s USA Championships event will be held in two locations: Huntington Beach Pier from June 18-19 and five full days at Lower Trestles at
San Onofre State Beach, CA from June 21-25. The Huntington Beach dates (June 18-19) will include all preliminary rounds of competition for the following Adult and Longboard Divisions:
“We’re very excited about this year’s USA Championships event and are confident it will be the best ever,” said
Mike Gerard, Surfing America’s executive director. “The Surfing America Prime Series has finished a second successful season on both coasts and has significantly raised the standard for Under 18 competition nationally. The Surfing America system is working and the
United States’ up and coming athletes are better because of it. We are sure to witness some incredible surfing at Lowers.”
“The announcement of the 2012 PacSun USA Surf Team is a significant and exciting event. We are proud to continue our support of these athletes and further help the development of surfing,” said
Gary Schoenfeld, CEO of PacSun.
The Surfing America USA Championships is recognized, globally, as the premier event in American surfing–thanks to its high caliber judging panels, live webcast, and four-person, twenty-minute heats. Although, the event is youth focused, it still holds divisions for elder surfers as well.
The event’s main stage, Lower Trestles, is located in
San Onofre State Beach, near
San Clemente, CA. Lower Trestles is recognized worldwide as the best surf break in the mainland
United States. “We are deeply honored to be given the privilege to host the USA Championships at this spectacular and beautiful setting,” added Gerard. “Surfing America would like to send special thanks to California State Parks this opportunity.”
“California State Parks is pleased to welcome Surfing America back to
San Onofre State Beach - Lower Trestles for the 2011 USA Championships,” said
Richard Haydon, SPSIII, South Sector Superintendent of California State Parks Orange Coast District. “Because Trestles routinely produces an outstanding contestable wave and is considered by many to be one of the premier surfing breaks in
North America, it is fitting that the very finest in amateur surfing will gather there to compete for this year’s titles.”
In addition, and in keeping with its quest to make surfing accessible for all who seek to participate, Surfing America will be running a special heat for disabled surfers in partnership with its newest affiliate organization, AmpSurf.
AmpSurf is a non-profit organization made up of amputees, veterans, friends and families of the disabled whose goal is to promote, inspire, educate, and rehabilitate people with disabilities–especially our veteran heroes–through adaptive surfing. AmpSurf has been providing learn to surf clinics for nine years and has served hundreds of disabled veterans as well as disabled adults and children who probably never would have had this experience if it hadn’t been for our program.
“AmpSurf is excited to establish this partnership with Surfing America and all its members,” said AmpSurf executive director,
Dana Cummings. “Becoming an affiliate organization of Surfing America will give us the opportunity to reach more individuals around the country and introduce them to adaptive surfing and competition.”
Immediately following the event Lower Trestles, on June 25th, the 2012 PacSun USA Surf Team will be selected. The 2012 PacSun USA Surf Team will represent the
United States next year at the 2012 Quiksilver
ISA World Junior Surfing Championships.
