Author: ASP World Tour

Atlantida, Xangri-La, Rio Grande do Sul / Brazil (Wednesday, May, 4, 2011) – All the predictions made by the swell forecast were right for today in the ASP 5-Star SuperSurf Internacional in Brazil. The Atlantida Pier was firing this morning with waves in the 4-6 feet (1.5 – 2 meters) range. To fulfill the scenario, the sun was shining with perfect winds for the beginning of the first ever ASP event held on the Xangri-La City, State of Rio Grande do Sul.

With sixteen heats of the Round 128 and four of the Round 96 being run, the highlight of today was the Brazilian Tomas Hermes, who earned an 8.83 pts from the judges for a tube riding en route to the day’s highest two-wave heat total, 15.56 pts out of 20 points.

“I couldn’t hear the score, but I knew it was going to be a high score. I pulled in so deep inside the barrel before coming out with the spit, that I knew right away that the score had to come out hi,” said Tomas Hermes. “I’ve checked the waves all day and saw nice barrels breaking on the inside section. I’m stoked to have had such nice start in this contest.”

Fellow Brazilian, Magno Pacheco, also had a good start in the competition; he threw an 8.00 pts in the 12th heat of round 128, the second highest score of the day.

“I’m very happy to set one of the day’s highlight so far,” said Magno Pacheco after winning the heat over Brazilian Wilson Nora and Tiago Bianchini. “The conditions are difficult right now, with the waves breaking all over making it hard to find the best take off place.”

John Max, from Brazil, advanced to the second round along with Leonardo Gianotti in second, defeating Marcos Pastro in third and Argentinean Santiago Muniz in fourth place.

“I’ve trained a lot for this contest, and happily I brought the right boards for the wave conditions based on the swell forecasts over the internet”, said John Max.

It was not a dream contest start for the Local (Gauchos) fans as their biggest hero, the top seeded surfer Rodrigo Dornelles (RS) a former elite ASP World Tour surfer was defeated in his first presentation this Wednesday In the Heat 1 of the Round 2. The heat was won by the surfer from Fernando de Noronha, Patrick Tamberg.

“I knew it was going to be a challenge to face the “Rock” (Rodrigo Dornelles) in his own place, but I tried to keep myself cool and choose the right waves, and happily it paid back very well,” said Patrick Tamberg, from Fernando de Noronha Island.

FROM TURKEY – The curiosity of this first day of competition was the unprecedented participation of two Turkish surfers in the ASP World Tour. Except that the two could not surf any wave in its heats.

“I just paddled during all the heat, but I’m happy anyway. Today is my birthday, I would love to make it through, but it’s all good”, said Emin Cihan Akca, who was defeated in the first heat of the day.

“I’m also happy for being the first surfer ever from my country to participate in an ASP event. There is not many waves there in Turkey, and the water is cold, So I choose to came to Brazil because I always heard good things about Brazil, good waves, nice weather and beautiful women, and I want to enjoy all this,” completed.

The other Turkish surfer Orcun Kavusturan was first erroneously reported as to be from Tunisia.
