JEFFREYS BAY, South Africa (Sunday, July 17, 2011) – Small surf continues at the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay, prompting event organizers to call another lay day for the world’s best surfers in South Africa.
Event No. 4 of 11 on the 2011 ASP World Title season, the Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay saw Round 1 completed on Friday in high-performance conditions, and will look to recommence with Round 2 in the coming days.
“Surf is still small this morning so we’ve called another lay day for competition,” Rich Porta, ASP International Head Judge, said. “We’re seeing some energy towards the end of the week that looks like it will send some solid surf our way, and we’re monitoring some possibilities over the next couple of days. We’ll return tomorrow at 7am to reassess conditions.”
When competition resumes, up first will be reigning 10-time ASP World Champion Kelly Slater (USA), 39, (or replacement) up against wildcard Shaun Payne (ZAF), 26. Event organizers will reconvene tomorrow morning at 7am to assess conditions for a possible 7:30am start.
