Clean Conditions Deliver on Opening Day of Quiksilver Clasico Mazatlan

MAZATLAN, Sinaloa / Mexico (Wednesday, June 1, 2011) – The opening day of the ASP 4-Star Quiksilver Clasico Mazatlan saw some of surfing’s iconic names take to the water alongside a mass of Latin underground talent and several of America’s up-and-comers in clean two-to-five foot waves at Mazatlan’s lefthand pointbreak of Playa Camaron.
The Quiksilver Clasico Mazatlan represents the first of three Latin American events on the ASP North America Calendar for 2011, offering talent from emerging surf nations the opportunity to capitalize on the valuable points available towards their ASP World Ranking while competing against several top international competitors.
Martin Passeri (ARG), 35, who earned two heat victories today, relied on a powerful frontside assault on the lefthanders of Playa Camaron to notch the day’s highest single-wave score, 7.33 out of 10, in Round 2.
“I’m really stoked to have made that heat,” Passeri said. “I tried my hardest and got a good wave out there. I’m happy with the result.”
Passeri was relieved to have a successful opening day after battling the fatigue brought on by the hot Mexican temperatures and long paddles back out at Playa Camaron.
“I started in the first round so I went to my room and drank water before the last heat,” Passeri said. “It’s hot and there is a lot of paddling, but this event is awesome. I’m happy to be here and making heats.”
Ian Crane (San Clemente, CA), 17, opened his Quiksilver Clasico Mazatlan campaign in strong form by drawing clean lines on the long sloping walls of the Mexican pointbreak on his forehand to earn his Round of 96 heat victory.
“It seems like it’s almost a little too big for this place right now, but the left breaking off of the boil on the inside is pretty fun,” Crane said. “I started off there and then the sets started breaking in the middle so I went over there. It’s kind of hard to find one of those, but I got a couple.”
Crane, who is a dedicated competitor on the ASP North America Pro Junior Series, is out to capitalize on the points available at the Quiksilver Clasico Mazatlan to begin building his seed on the men’s ASP World Ranking.
“I’m 17 and I know it takes a little while to build your seed up so I figured I might as well start now,” Crane said. “It’s pretty close to home and I’m a goofy foot and it’s a left so it made sense to come down here.”
Kalani Robb (HAW), 34, was one of a handful of former elite ASP World Tour members to travel to Mazatlan to experience a new destination and the stylish Hawaiian maintained his impressive form on the opening day of competition, notching the day’s highest heat total, 13.50 out of 20, while moving through to the Round of 64.
“I live in California now and it’s only a short trip from there,” Robb said. “It’s a lefthand point with warm water and all of the boys were going down so I figured I’d just surf the contest and have fun. The wave was very difficult today, it’s a long left and it really peels, but it’s really mushy. You’ve kind of got to slow yourself down and it can be a hard thing to do. I like going fast, but it helps slow your surfing down.”
The Quiksilver Clasico Mazatlan will recommence tomorrow with Heat 13 of the Round of 64 at 8am local time and is webcast LIVE via www.quiksilver.com/mazatlan
