The way to do it - 05 Jun 2007
I went for a weekend's surfing with curl curl surf and it was fantastic. The group who went were a mixture of friends and strangers but the whole atmosphere meant that even before we had arrived in Devon everyone was friends. The farmhouse itself is gorgeous - secluded, comfortable and most importantly perhaps, only a short drive from the beach. The guys in charge, Tom and Dudley (I think), made sure we were comfortable and we all cracked open a few beers. An early start on the saturday morning rewarded us with the prospect of a full day's surfing. Some of us had surfed before, and some of us (me included) were complete novices. But we got more than enough handy hints and tuition to ensure that we were up and surfing (allbeit inelegantly) in no time. Lunch on the beach, a spot of footie or cricket and then back into the water for another couple of hours. Then, weary, back to the farmhouse, for an unbelievable dinner - organic roast lamb staright from the farm. We all went to bed that night feeling tired, replete and hugely content. The next morning was like the previous: up early, and down to the beach, and after a few hours of perfecting our skills we packed up and said goodbye to the beach. Lunch on the sunday was in a cracking country pub, and offered us a good chance to disect our various performances. The trip back to London was mainly concerned with sleep, but by monday morning I (somewhat counterintuitively) didn't feel tried: I was refreshed and invigorated. The w/e was brill. Such a great getaway from London, and all the hassle of organising it was shouldered by the guys at Curl Curl Surf. Don't bother trying to jet off to the continent. There's so much to see and do in this island, and a weekend of surfing in Devon is a great way to do it.
