Organisers of the Billabong World Junior Championships at North Narrabeen Beach, Sydney, Australia, are looking to kick off the first heat of the men’s main event at around 9.30am (local time) this morning, 1 January 2006.

The swell has increased over night as predicted and as the tide drops surfers can expect to get some excellent rides.

The aim is to complete the first round of the men’s main event today, which comprises of 16 heats.

“If we just hold off till a bit later we’re going to see some really good waves,” said Contest Director Luke Egan. “I just couldn’t send anyone out early when I knew it was going to get heaps better. I’m hoping to get going at around 9am to 9.30am local time.”

The Billabong World Junior Championships are sanctioned by ASP International and serve as a launching pad for upcoming superstars as they progress to the elite senior ranks and the heats today will highlight the incredible ability that the youngsters possess.

Today will lead on from the Von Zipper trials, which were held yesterday in conditions that improved toward the afternoon. The trials were won by New Zealand surfer Bobby Hansen.
