FLINTOFF AND HOBGOOD WIN THE MONEY IN THE FOSTER’S EXPRESSION SESSION

News provided by ASP World Tour on 26 September 2005

Kirk Flintoff (AUS) and Damien Hobgood (USA) walked away from site of the Quiksilver Pro France presented by Samsung today with their pockets full after claiming awards in the Foster’s Expression Session.

In the bumpy one metre (three feet) waves that became seriously wind affected throughout the one-hour display, Flintoff landed two massive “aerial to revert” manoeuvres on one wave to claim the prize of $US2000 for the best aerial while Hobgood emerged from a deep tube to claim best wave and a further $US1000.

The expression sessions are an integral part of the Foster’s ASP Men’s World Tour as they encourage surfers to push the limits in a format that doesn’t penalise surfers for falling off when trying new manoeuvres.

Not run today was The Kelly Slater Experiment presented by the Mitchell Surfing Foundation, as the conditions deteriorated due to the gusty onshore wind. This will now be run later in the event schedule.

This event, as the name suggests, will toy with new contest formats devised by Slater and will offer $US10,000 in prize money. The idea is to explore better ways of simplifying competitive surfing therefore appealing to a broader market.

Organisers of the Quiksilver Pro France will assess conditions tomorrow morning (Monday) at 8am local time and will make the decision regarding completing the remaining four heats of round one and beginning round two.

The forecast for the next few days looks extremely promising with favourable winds and a new swell predicted to arrive tomorrow. Rumours are circulating that the biggest waves of the year could be seen by Wednesday.

This augers well for the continuation of the run of incredible conditions that the Foster’s ASP Men’s World Tour has scored so far this year. The “Dream Tour” as it has been dubbed, is alive and well.

It’s going to be a battle royale. Tune into the live webcast of the Quiksilver Pro France, presented by Samsung with Evian, at www.quiksilver.com/france05 and www.aspworldtour.com The broadcast will be in four languages – English, French, Portuguese and Spanish.
