NEW SWELL ON THE WAY FOR BILLABONG PRO, JEFFREYS BAY
News provided by ASP World Tour on 19 July 2005
With Jeffreys Bay showing definite signs of the predicted new swell, organisers of the Billabong Pro have once again placed the event on hold for today but are expecting tomorrow to be “killer”.
The event, the sixth on the Foster’s ASP Men’s World Tour has been in a holding pattern since last Thursday as the waves that were present for the opening two rounds of the contest abated and close to dead flat conditions have prevailed since.
“We’ve heard that there is swell a couple of hours away down the coast,” said Billabong Pro Contest Director, Mike Parsons. “So we should see signs of it later today and with all things going to plan we could get underway tomorrow. There’s already a few sets starting to come through the break now.”
Organisers will again meet at first light tomorrow morning (Wednesday July 20) to assess the conditions.
The event has two full days of competition to complete and after some epic showdowns during the event’s early days, all are anticipating some explosive surfing once the wave-starved competitors return to the water.
“Don’t expect any departure of form after this break,” wrote ASP President Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew in his regular aspworldtour.com column. “I mean, at the last Billabong event in Tahiti, it rained for a solid week, and who can forget the performances that went down after they emerged from the shelters. Expect fireworks once play is resumed here!”
Results from previous rounds plus the heat draw for round three can all be viewed at aspworldtour.com and billabongpro.com
